IN THE PROCESS OF BEING RESCHEDULED: 2020 BBB Secure Your ID Day
is on June 13th, from 8 am - 11 am at the Salem Civic Center Stadium Parking Lot.
Bring up to 3 boxes of the personal documents to shred.
Event could change due to limitations and restrictions from the COVD-19 health crisis.
Last year, BBB Serving Western Virginia shredded 20,300 pounds of personal documents and served 466 vehicles during its annual ‘Secure Your ID’ document shredding event. We hope to shred even more in 2020!
The BBB has been hosting Secure Your ID Day since 2008. BBB’s from across North America join in on the event designed to protect consumers from the growing threat of identity theft. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to attend this free community service event and properly shred and destroy sensitive documents using industrial shredders supplied by Commonwealth Document Management. BBB staff members also attend each event to provide advice and tips for identity theft protection.
What To Shred:
Did you know that protecting your identity is largely in your own hands? Fifty-six percent of identity theft victims traced the theft to something that was stolen from their own possession. So here’s the first rule: If you don’t need it, shred it – responsibly. BBB is here to help with Secure Your ID Day.
Here are three types of personal documents you might consider shredding:
Personal documents. Be cautious of what documents contain such information as your Social Security number, birthday, banking information and pin numbers or passwords.
Check your credit cards. Any document having to do with current or expired credit cards can be sensitive. Think of receipts, credit offers and applications, bank statements and other similar documents.
Be prepared for tax season. Be mindful of documents you may need for tax reasons. Shred Day is for documents and materials that are no longer necessary.
The BBB thanks its partners for their support of the 2020 Secure Your ID Day.
